The term contaminants is used to cover a range of substances that can be found in water and include:
  • substances either naturally originated or produced by human activities
  • substances that are not discharged directly but they are formed unintentionaly (e.g by-products of chlorination) or during process and through degradation
  • substances that are biologically active in the environment they enter and their presence is a result of continuous discharge, durability and mobility in the environment (e.g bioaccumulation)
  • substances that remain after the treatment of wastes and they enter in groundwater though runoffs.
